Harmony Awakening: Angelina Yershova on Music, Motherhood, and the Art of Listening

In her latest album Harmony Awakening, Kazakh-born, Italy-based composer and sound artist Angelina Yershova invites listeners into an inner journey — one where emotion, silence, and technology blend into a single breath. Known for bridging classical discipline with electronic experimentation, Yershova’s music feels both cosmic and intimate, weaving stories that transcend geography and genre.
We sat down with Angelina to talk about rebirth, motherhood, the sound of silence, and what it truly means to awaken harmony within.

1. The title of your new album, “Harmony Awakening”, evokes a sense of inner rebirth and reconciliation. Was there a specific moment when you felt that this awakening was happening — in your life or in your music?

Angelina: The title Harmony Awakening was born from a deep yearning to rediscover my authenticity—both in life and in music. This journey began during the pandemic in 2020, as the world was gripped by uncertainty. Amid that chaos, I experienced the brightest moment of my life: the birth of my son Artur. That event brought me a powerful sense of peace and gratitude. While the world was changing, I felt a new connection to Nature and people everywhere. It was a gentle awakening, as if an inner light was kindled, guiding me to create music that reflects this newfound harmony.

2. Your background bridges classical piano and experimental electronic music. How do these two worlds — the rigor of tradition and the freedom of exploration — coexist within you today?

Angelina: Classical piano represents for me an anchor: discipline, structured form, and respect for tradition. Experimental electronic music, on the other hand, is my space of creative freedom and exploration. These two worlds coexist harmoniously: tradition gives me solid foundations, while experimentation allows me to fly beyond boundaries, blending rigor and freedom into a single artistic identity.

3. You were born in Kazakhstan, but your artistic journey unfolded across Italy and Europe. What traces of the Kazakh landscape, silence, and vast skies can still be found in your current sound?

Angelina: Born in Kazakhstan but having developed my artistic journey in Italy and Europe, the spirit of the Kazakh landscape — with its endless horizons and the profound silence of the steppes — still breathes vividly in my compositions. I often strive to evoke the vastness and depth I felt as a child. Rhythm plays a special role in my music; I frequently incorporate traditional Kazakh instruments and shamanic rhythms into my pieces. This connection is evident in albums I have already released, such as “Nomad”, “Cosmotengri” or “Shaman’s Wires”, and is sure to continue in future projects. All these elements strongly influence my pursuit of airy sounds, hypnotic rhythms, occasionally archaic chants, and contemplative pauses that tell the story of the vastness and spiritual essence of my homeland.

4. In an era where technology often homogenizes music, your work seems to do the opposite — creating identity through the machine. How do you keep the human essence alive in the digital realm?

Angelina: I believe the human essence is at the heart of music, even digital music. I always strive to maintain spontaneity, emotion, and personal gesture in every creation. Even through machines, I enrich my work with improvised elements, living textures, and intentional imperfections that preserve my identity and that of everyone involved in the project.

5. Your music has often drawn inspiration from the cosmos and science, as in your Astroconcerts. In Harmony Awakening, the journey feels more inward than celestial. Has your way of looking at the universe changed?

Angelina: My Astroconcerts look to the cosmos as a profound source of inspiration for the human being — a continuous journey toward discovery and infinity. With Harmony Awakening, this journey takes on a more introspective dimension: the universe becomes a mirror reflecting the vast inner world within each of us. I experience it as a boundless Cosmos, an unlimited field that connects the sky and the soul. To look at the sky is also to recognize in others the light and depth that inhabit it.

6. You’ve collaborated with creators from vastly different worlds — composers, DJs, astronomers, theater directors. Is there a common language that connects all these creative dimensions?

Angelina: Collaborating with diverse artists has taught me that the common language is listening, the desire to explore, and mutual curiosity. Music unites composers, DJs, astronomers, and directors through its ability to dialogue without boundaries, creating a very intense, rich, and spontaneous creative flow.

7. As a woman who has built an international career in electronic music — a field still heavily male-dominated — do you see yourself as a pioneer, or simply as an artist who has always followed her voice beyond labels?

Angelina: I have never defined myself as a pioneer but rather as a determined artist who has always followed her own voice. The electronic scene is still very male-dominated, but I chose to follow my own path without being influenced by labels, valuing feminine sensitivity as a unique and authentic quality. A great example is the song Sweet Glissando.

8. Kazakh, Italian, and European cultures coexist within your identity. How do these different cultural perspectives shape your worldview — and your personal definition of harmony?

Angelina: The Kazakh, Italian, and European cultures coexist within me like different languages of a single profound quest. I seek the key that can unite all hearts, people from every culture and background, without exclusion. This key is Love, and I believe we are here to learn to love unconditionally. This plurality has taught me to view the world with openness and curiosity, constantly redefining my identity and the meaning of harmony as a delicate balance between diversity, acceptance, and respect.

9. If you could teach one thing to a young artist today — not about technique, but about listening — what would your most important lesson be?

Angelina: Listening is the key to growth. I would advise listening to silence, Nature, the space around music, one’s dreams, and the voices of others. Only through deep listening can one find their true voice and continuously renew creativity.

10. Is there a phrase, an image, or a sound that captures the essence of Harmony Awakening better than any verbal explanation ever could?

Angelina: The words of Buddha come to mind: “Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” For me, this encapsulates the core of Harmony Awakening — an awakening born from silence and inner light, an invitation to discover calm and harmony within oneself, regardless of external chaos.

Finding Light Within: The Closing Notes

As our conversation draws to an end, one can sense that Angelina Yershova’s creative path is less about reaching a destination and more about an ever-evolving inner voyage. Through Harmony Awakening, she transforms sound into a language of peace — a reminder that amid the noise of modern life, harmony is not found outside of us but born from within.
Whether exploring the boundless cosmos or the stillness of her own heart, Yershova continues to compose with sincerity, sensitivity, and a quiet power that transcends cultural and musical borders. Her awakening, like her music, is a call to listen — deeply, openly, and with love.
