It becomes a connection, a memory, and a narrative of its own.
Q1. To begin, could you share the story behind Jessica Hunt Photography and what inspired you to build a brand rooted in inclusivity and emotional storytelling within the luxury wedding space?
Jessica Hunt: The story behind Jessica Hunt Photography started with me falling in love with capturing people’s experiences. I photographed my first wedding as a senior in high school, and from there, I was swept up in the immense joy of documenting others’ memories and celebrations. As I continued to grow personally and professionally after becoming full-time with the brand in January 2015, I knew I wanted to build a business that reflects how deeply I feel about respecting, celebrating, and honoring the people around me.
Much of what I do and what I care most about within my business is leading a human-first experience for the couple and my team members. People and their experiences are important, and marriage is a sacred centuries-old tradition that deserves to be approached with care. Every human being deserves that experience, and it is such an honor to play a role in so many lives on their wedding day, their culture, their story, and their real emotions as they navigate that day.
Q2. Your work has been praised for capturing authentic emotions and representing diverse love stories with depth and dignity. How do you ensure every client feels seen, respected, and celebrated throughout the creative process?
Jessica Hunt: Being a respectful storyteller requires me to approach every touch point and interaction with a client by working to understand them, their priorities, and what they hold most dear. Doing my own personal research on different clients’ unique cultural traditions or wedding ceremonies, keeping an open and positive mind about the various ways people can celebrate, and approaching every interaction with respect and honor is how I make sure all of my clients feel honored and celebrated, no matter who they are.
Q3. You often speak about the importance of inclusive narratives in luxury wedding photography. What are some ways the industry can evolve to embrace broader definitions of beauty, love, and celebration?
Jessica Hunt: The wedding industry, like any other space dominated by visual media, could be far more willing to feature and celebrate the different ways people can celebrate their marriage and cultural traditions. Oftentimes, popular wedding publications and social media accounts feature wedding celebrations based on Western marriage traditions and selected for aesthetics, not the depth of feeling or richness of culture a wedding celebration can hold. Weddings have been celebrated throughout human history in myriad ways, giving the wedding industry greater opportunity to share and celebrate the diversity of stories and couples.
By featuring those clients, openly celebrating them across media and publications, and pushing the boundaries of fresh inspiration, we expand viewers’ expectations about other people, their cultures, and their weddings.
Q4. Your associate program has gained recognition for its rigorous shadow experience. How does this mentorship model ensure consistency in quality while allowing each photographer to maintain their artistic individuality?
Jessica Hunt: I focus on supporting my team as we serve on a wedding day by walking them through every moment in a mentorship capacity. I emphasize showing up for them, not only professionally, but also personally, and seeing my role in their lives as not only a teacher but an example. Everything we do together is done with the promise in mind from me, as their mentor, that they will learn and benefit from our time together, not only professionally, but personally. And, like every good mentor, I hope that they will one day surpass what they have accomplished before joining our team and continue to grow as photographers and as people.
My goal is to set them up for success so they can serve our clients well and with ease. Our team simply needs to show up and do what they do best: take beautiful photos and create gorgeous, lasting heirlooms of our clients’ memories. I invest time in teaching them either at events or off-site through virtual calls, along with in-person trainings, so they can constantly refine and hone their technical abilities and the ways that they navigate working with clients with respect, expertise, and grace. With that mentorship, they walk into every celebration with the confidence to do their best work and be their best selves.
Q5. Empathy seems to play a central role in your client relationships. Can you describe a moment or project that truly reaffirmed your belief in empathy as a creative and business strength?
Jessica Hunt: With so many instances that come to mind, let me tell you about this one wonderful groom, who on his wedding day I could tell was incredibly nervous and emotional. He was not a person who forced many of the so-called ‘picture smiles’ and had a very stoic personality. Instead of pushing him to step outside his comfort zone and fake-laugh or force smiles for me, I encouraged him to keep his stoic, easy face in all his portraits and let him be himself in his photographs. I wanted him to feel celebrated, seen, and at ease. This approach resulted in a client and family who have hired me every year since their wedding for additional family portraits and other events.
Allowing someone to be themselves and not forcing them into a performance like this is an excellent example of how empathy guides everything we do. We try to put ourselves in our clients’ shoes and understand what they may be navigating personally, so every moment in front of the camera feels easy and natural. Life’s most significant events can trigger strong emotions and stressors, and being photographed can be intimidating. We work hard to understand the challenges our clients are navigating and provide an easy way for them to navigate those feelings, all while looking wonderful in their photographs.
Q6. Looking ahead, how do you envision the future of luxury wedding photography, particularly in balancing artistic innovation, inclusivity, and emotional storytelling in a rapidly changing cultural landscape?
Jessica Hunt: I hope to see luxury wedding photography develop in a way that not only focuses on the idea that luxury is based on wealth, but also on the idea that true luxury is a wealth of experiences, emotions, and moments grounded in genuine, real connection and feeling between humans. It is not just about a beautiful location or the cost per guest spent, but about the wealth of humanity found at each event. I want to see the industry continue to develop and share a greater diversity of stories, so even more people can see themselves as just as wealthy and draped in the luxury of ‘to love and be loved’ as any other celebration.
